integrated pest management

One of the worst things that anyone can face is having pests on their property and destroying their plants. Many people turn to pesticides and other chemical options, but others have found a better solution in IPM, or integrated pest management. This is a strategy that focuses on preventing pests in the long term rather than the short term through things such as:

  • biological control
  • habitat manipulation
  • changing cultural practice

Pesticides may be used but only after careful monitoring shows that they’re needed based on established guidelines.

Below are three of the benefits that IPM offers:

Pesticide Resistance Develops Slower

Pests can develop pesticide resistance as time goes by. As you constantly use chemicals on your crops, the process of natural selection will make the pests resist the pesticides. Integrated pest management, or IPM, can slow down these species’ development and help your crops to have great yields.

The Ecosystem’s Balanced with Integrated Pest Management

You may eradicate pests by using pesticides. But there is a cost that comes with this. Other healthy and helpful organisms might also be damaged by your pesticides. With IPM, you are going to eradicate pests that are specifically targeted and not harm other species.

Reduces the Chance of Ground Water & Air Pollution

Things such as pesticides and other chemicals don’t just go into the pests that they are trying to kill. They also can get into the soil and into the air, meaning that they can pollute the air and the water in the ground. This is a problem in general but can truly be one if you have a well on your property.
