4 Great Tips for Getting Your Garden Ready for Planting

Spring is finally here, and that means that it’s time to start getting your garden ready for your flowers and vegetables. So, below we have three tips that you can use to help you get started.

Clean Out Your Garden – Now you want to clean out your garden and remove the debris such as leaves, weeds, and leftover snow. Make sure that you are getting the roots when you remove weeds, so they don’t grow back. You also want to sharpen any garden tools, if applicable. They’ll be needed for soil care and plant maintenance.

Revitalize Your Garden Soil – Since the soil’s probably packed and dried out after the winter, you want to add some moisture. Adding organic material such as manure or compost is a good place to start. It’s also possible you’ll need to test it to find out the nutrients needed so that it’s given the right blend.  You may also need to put in more fertilizer so that the soil’s health is increased.

Trim Your Old Plants – Any plants that made it through the winter will need pruning so they’re able to grow this spring. Make sure that you’re waiting until the middle of April or May since you might have an unexpected freeze. Any plants that are blooming should be pruned immediately after they’ve bloomed. This way you don’t have to worry about cutting off any future flowers. You should prune your summer plants in the early spring.
