5 Signs You May Have Lawn Grubs

Grubs are a huge problem for any homeowner. They can destroy your lawn and your plants. But when you know that you have them, you can take care of them quickly to help your lawn stay healthy. Below are five signs that you have a problem with grubs and that you need to take steps to take care of them as quickly as possible.

You See Them

Even though this might seem obvious, seeing larva in your yard might take some investigation. Take your shovel and dig a few little spots on the lawn. If there’s more than 5 grubs in each square foot, there’s a good chance you’ve got an infestation.

Patches of Dead Grass

Have you noticed patches of oddly shaped dead spots on your lawn? This is often seen during late summer/early fall. That’s because grubs have a bigger appetite and they quickly kill grass in strange patterns.

Spots That are Spongy

It’s possible that it looks like you have a healthy lawn. However, when you walk on it, you’re noticing spongy spots. This could mean that you have grubs. As they’re devouring your grass roots, the soil often stars feeling less springy and denser.

Hovering Moths

If you are seeing little moths flying over your lawn’s surface, your gardens and your beds, these may be mature grubs. It also could mean that you are about to be attacked. They’re looking for a thriving, healthy lawn so their babies will have enough food when they hatch. As time goes by, you might notice more activity as the eggs hatch and the babies start feeding.

Other Critters are Visiting Your Yard

Just like grubs love to feast on your grass, a lot of larger creatures love to feast on the lawn grubs. It’s possible that you are going to skunks, raccoons, birds, moles, and other creatures hanging around your yard and taking care of the grub problem. This is helpful. However, you probably shouldn’t let it get that far since it’s really better not to have a grub problem in the first place.
