Spring is one of the best times to clean your gutters. Storms from the winter could have put debris into your gutters, and with spring coming more debris will be entering them. So, now is the time to start anew. Below are five tips that you can use to clean out your gutters in the best way possible.
Wear Shoes with Rubber Soles – There’s a chance you might have to go up onto your roof so that you can access parts of the gutters or clear away debris. So you want to make sure that you have shoes with rubber soles so that you won’t slip as easily. If your roof is wet, wait until it’s dry to go up on it.
Clean Debris from Your Roof & Gutters Storms and wind will blow lots of debris into the gutters. Before starting to clean the gutters, you should make sure your roof is clear. If not, the debris left on your roof will go into the gutters you just cleaned when another storm comes. Using an extension or a good step ladder, clean out small twigs and leaves using your gloved hands or a scoop.
Flush Your Gutters with Your Hose – Before you rinse your gutters out, it’s a good idea that the elbow’s removed. Otherwise, debris can go into the underground drains or downspout, leading to problems with damming. Use a trigger nozzle that you can hook easily to your gutter’s edge as the ladder’s moved along.
Don’t Forget Your Downspouts – Unclogging the downspouts is just as important. This can be done by running water into your downspout at full force. You can usually clear away clogs by tapping on the downspout’s side. Remember to protect your eyes while doing this.
Check for Any Damage – While you’re cleaning your gutters, look for any damage such as holes, corrosion, missing or loose fasteners, and sagging. You can plug smaller holes using caulk. You can replace or tighten your fasteners. However, if your damage is extensive enough, it’s probably time to replace the gutters.
