Caring for Poinsettias

If you are given a poinsettia, one of the things that you want to do is know how to care for it properly so that it lasts through the year and beyond. Below are some tips that you can use for caring for poinsettias so that your beautiful plants will keep on going.

Caring for Poinsettias – Proper Lighting

One thing that poinsettia love is the sun. they’re subtropical. Choose a window that is sunny that faces east, south, or west, since your home’s north side won’t get a lot of sunlight. During the fall, make sure that it’s getting 12 hours’ worth of darkness every day. Try to cover them using some black plastic. This is going to help it grow.

Caring for Poinsettias – Temperature

So that your poinsettia keeps blooming you want to be in a temperature of 65 to 75. Don’t expose it to sudden temperature changes or drafts. Thin or dried-out poinsettias mean that the weather has changed. They don’t like sudden climate changes.

Caring for Poinsettias – Water & Fertilizer

A lot of water is going to drown the plant. Once the holidays are over, remember to water them. However, you want to decrease its amount by the time April comes. If you’d like it to bloom once again, add fertilizer. Adding some regular doses is going to keep it going through summer.
