  • They’re Mexico Natives –They were used by ancient Aztecs for making red dye. The sap was used for controlling fever.
  • They’re not Poisonous. Even though some pets and humans are sensitive to the sap, it’s not toxic. However, it can irritate the eyes, skin, digestive system (when consumed), and mucus membranes.
  • They’re Not Always Red. They come in over 100 varieties including shades of pink, white, cream, purple, yellow, and orange. There are also bicolor and marble varieties.
  • That colorful, showy part isn’t the leaf. The actual flowers are yellow and they’re in the leaves’ centers.
  • They need dark nights and sunshine for blooming. Because the days are shorter and the nights are longer during fall and winter, that is what causes their blooming. If they’re planted close to artificial light, such as streetlamps, the blooming cycle is disrupted.
  • They can grow as tall as 15 feet. In Central America and Mexico, they’re perennial woody shrubs and they can grow 10-15 feet in height.
