lyme disease

The other day we posted about avoiding ticks while you are camping. Today we thought we’d continue the problem of ticks and talk about some of the myths associated with Lyme disease. Below are four common myths that people believe about Lyme disease.

Lyme Disease Myth 1 – You’ll Get the Bulls-Eye Rash

Even though this is something that a lot of people believe, it’s not true. The CDC believes that only around 70% will get this skin rash. There are many symptoms, and even if you don’t have a rash, you should consider getting tested if you have other symptoms.

Lyme Disease Myth 2 – Everyone is Cured with Antibiotics

Although a lot of people are helped with antibiotics, up to 20% still have symptoms following treatment. This condition that people who aren’t helped with antibiotics is known as PLD, or Persistent Lyme Disease.

Lyme Disease Myth 3 – You Don’t Have It if the Test’s Negative

You may think that you are in the clear if your test came back negative. However, sometimes the antibodies aren’t high enough, and the test comes back negative because the test wasn’t able to detect them.

Lyme Disease Myth 4 – If You’re Bitten, You Know It

There’s something in the saliva of a tick that numbs you when you’re bitten. Chances are that you aren’t going to know that there’s a tick feeding on you. That’s why it’s so important to check yourself over when you come inside. Otherwise, you may not even know that you have one on you.

Lyme Disease Myth 5 – Ticks Drop from the Trees

They don’t drop, fly or jump from the trees. They are crawlers. If you have found one on your back or head, chances are that it’s crawled up from your leg or foot. Tuck the legs of your pants into your shoes and socks, wear a shirt with long sleeves, and tuck the shirt into your pants. This will help keep them on your clothing’s outside.
