4 Common Types of Patio Materials

Today, on Memorial Day, we remember all of our service members who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our country. But it’s also the unofficial start of summer when we’ll be spending more time outside. If you are looking for a new patio for your home, you might wonder about the patio materials that are available. Below are some of the most common types of patio materials that people use.

Patio Materials – Concrete

If you are looking for something simple and inexpensive, concrete patios are the way to go. You can choose just a slab of concrete, or you can choose one that has a pattern stamped on it. However, if you go with a stamped pattern you are going to have more maintenance. However, if your budget is small, concrete is a great choice.

Patio Materials – Natural Stone

If you are looking for a look that’s completely natural, then natural stone is the way to go. There are a lot of different kinds of stone that you can choose from, including limestone, bluestone, flagstone, and slate. It will cost more since it’s quarried and it must be brought in, which adds transportation costs.

It also will cost more for installation since it will take longer for it to be laid down. The different thicknesses in the stones mean that each of the pieces must be placed and then lifted so that it’s level.

Patio Materials – Brick

Brick gives your home an old-world charm, but it comes with a few problems. It’s porous so that it will retain moisture. When the weather freezes, it’s going to crack so you’ll have to replace it. In the shady areas, moss can grow on bricks, so it needs scrubbing off.  This happens even in sunny areas.

Patio Materials – Pavers

There are a lot of different colors, shapes, and patterns that you can choose from when it comes to paving stones. The nice thing about using pavers is that you can create a look that is all your own with paving stones. So, you can create something that is different than anyone else’s.
