plants around a pool

Recently, we posted a blog about pool landscaping and how to choose the one that is right for you. Today we are going to continue a bit further for those who have a pool in their backyard and talk about plants around a pool. Below are some tips that you can use to help you with choosing the plants around your pool.

Tips for Choosing the Plants Around a Pool

  • Choose Plants that are Low Litter – You want to choose plants that don’t drop a lot of leaves, along with those that don’t have thorns, spines, or seed pods. When you follow this tip, you are going to have less maintenance and problems with your filtration system.
  • Steer Clear of Plants with Strong Root Systems – Bamboo and umbrella look great as a tree. However, they have destructive and invasive root systems. These can damage your pool paving, your pool shell, and the water pipes.
  • Monitor Your New Plants – When you first put a plant in the ground, you want to give it special care until it becomes established. Make sure it’s regularly deep-watered when you plant them and during any dry periods. This should be done twice monthly. Add a lot of mulch around new plants. It’s going to help with retaining moisture and regulating the temperature of the soil.
  • Choose Hardy Plants – Although there aren’t any plants that are adept at being splashed by chlorinated water, there are a few that are hardy. Agave, cordylines, and others. It’s a good idea to look for plants that have leathery, large leaves. You also can ask the professionals at the store about plants that they suggest.

These are some of the things that you should remember when it comes to choosing plants for around a pool.  Along with the tips that we offered the other day about pool landscaping, these tips about choosing plants will help your yard look wonderful.
